Where do you go to escape?
Anywhere from Esperance to
Kununurra. Basically anywhere
I can roll my swag out under the
stars. We're spoilt for choice
here, and there are still places
you can go where you can
have it to yourself. I love the
karri [Eucalyptus diversicolor]
forests of the south-west.
I especially love Denmark.
If WA was a character in
your book, what would they
look like? Um... large? And
sunburnt, I suppose. Terrible
skin. With a big thirst.
would you
ting friends?
ntle, because
it s changed quite a bit
over time but it still retains
its historic bones and its
rafish, easygoing livability.
It's somewhere you can
walk and talk, have a swim
or a beer or a cofee, see
a movie and grab a feed
all in the one day and never
once need to get into a car.
And at night?Well, the food
has definitely got better in
Perth in the past five years or
so. I'd probably go somewhere
tried and true. I'd start with
a glass of riesling at [wine bar]
Balthazar. Then, for something
elegant I'd try [French bistro]
Petite Mort. Though chances
are we'd end up in a cosy
corner table at Balthazar.
Why?To show them what's
still there, because it'll blow
their minds. And because this
is one place we have saved
from reckless development.
I'm proud to have been a part
of that. There are lots of other
places that need protection,
that need defenders more
than ever before. So I'd start
with the good news story at
Ningaloo and go from there.
Tim Winton’s latest novel, The
Boy Behind the Curtain, is out
now. A film adaptation of his
book Dirt Music is currently
being shot by Gregor Jordan
(Ned Kelly) in the Kimberley.

You’re passionate about the
environment — where in WA
would you take someone
to make your point about it
needing to be protected?
To Ningaloo Reef, near
Exmouth. Let them swim
with a whale shark, a manta
ray or a humpback whale
(probably all three), and let
them see the corals and
untouched beaches.
