Traveller caught out
Readers should be wary of the advice from
Walter (“Travellers save on health premiums”,
Letters, April). I suspended my private health
cover for three months while I was in Africa
with comprehensive travel insurance and
indeed saved on my premium. But fast-for-
ward to the next year after I lodged my tax
return and I got a nice surprise in the mail from
the ATO stating that since I did not have health
insurance for three months I had to pay the
Medicare levy for that time, which turned out
to be more than what I would have spent on
my insurance. I couldn’t believe how unfair it
was considering I had travel insurance.
So make sure you do your sums before you
suspend. Happy travels!
