RAINED

OUT

HOW TO RIDE /ADBGARAGE / WE RECOMMEND / TECH / KIDZ KORNER / USED RIDE

ITHASDONEnothingbutrain
andtosayI’mgoinginsaneisa
serious understatement.
Everything keeps getting rained
out orcalled offandallthe
private tracks are completely
soaked orunderwater.
There is nothingworse than
lookingat the weather report
when you are hangingto ride
and seeingnothingbut rain
forecastfortherest ofthe
month. MywifetellsmeI’m
mopingaround the house like a
grumpyoldman.
Even shecan’twaitforthe
raintoclearsoshecanget rid
ofme.TheonlyridingIhave
been abletodowasatmy
training schoolswhich,mightI
add, havebeen inthemud.
Riding inthemudcan
actuallybequiteenjoyable,but
cleaning your sledwhen you
gethome isdreadful.The
KX250F actuallydoes quite
wellinthemud.Beingsolightis
ablessing asthebikedoesn’t
end up weighing a tonne when

all themudhasbuiltupthe way
a450Fdoes.
Thelittlemotorhas plentyof
rev and power to keep the bike
motoring along. You just have
toavoidthebigbogholesas
much as possible so the 250
doesn’tget sucked down. It’s all
about momentum and ifyou
can keepthe bike movingand
revvingwithout stoppingthen
the bikeperforms well.
Four-fiddies usuallylike to
overheat and dumpaheapof
coolant when mud ridingbut I
haven’thadthisproblem with
theKX250F.Thebikewas
workinghardinthemudbutit
never overheatedordropped
any coolant.

CLUTCH
Even the clutchgot a workout
but after I spentafewhours
with thepressure washer
blastingthe mud away I
changed the engine oil and, to
my surprise,itwasstillingood
conditionanddidn’tsmell like

burnt crispssothisgives me an
indication that the clutchplates
held upwellandarestillin
goodcondition.
Afterthatmud, thestock
chain isn’tlookingtoopretty
andtherearBridgestone
Battlecross is showing some
wearbutthebrakepadsstood
uptotheslushreallywell.In
fact,they are still looking new.
Theplastics andstickerkit
have a few extra scratchesbut
after a washandasquirtwith
some silicone they come up
shiny and new again. The KX-F
is still in top shape and hasn’t
givenmeanygriefasyet.
It has been veryreliable
and easyto live with and I
have been enjoyingit the
whole time. Fingers crossed
the rain stops andIcanstart
gettingafewdryridesinover

surehowmuchmoreofthis

go insane.
