Elle Australia – June 2017

(Jacob Rumans) #1
“When I injured
my knee, I couldn’t
go surfing and
could only do low-
impact exercise, so
I started swimming
with fins. It’s an
amazing workout,
particularly for
the core, legs and
glutes. My workout

philosophy is to
keep it fun and to do
something you love.
For me, being able
to stay in the water
was really important
throughout my
recovery and the fins
were a great way to
allow me time at the
beach and to stay fit.”

“When I exercise,
I have to wear my
Garmin watch,
especially if I’m
doing a running
session. Playing
cricket, I need to
be strong yet lean
and agile, so I work
out six days a week
at the gym, doing
running or skills.
I love seeing how
many kilometres
I’ve covered at the
end of the day,
and I always try to
beat the amount
I did the day before.
Even if I know I have
a lighter day, I’ll go
for a walk to try to
get my distance
up. You’re always
accountable for
how much you do
because the watch
doesn’t lie.”

“My foam roller
goes everywhere
with me. I find it
so beneficial for
my training and
recovery – I really
notice when I don’t
do enough of it. It
helps me to loosen
up and reactivate
my muscles, so
I spend many nights
watching TV as I roll
away. There’s a lot
of contact in AFL
and it’s a physically
demanding sport,
so after a big game
it’s important that
I can get straight
back up and into
training. Rolling
comes down to trial
and error – just
finding a spot that
feels good and
working on it. The
trick is to find a firm
roller – that way
you get maximum
benefits.”@ Foamroller,$
