“Meh” “Something’s gotta give”
how to look forw ard to work again
nothing to be done
Well, sort of. You can always be looking at ways to better
yourself in your 9-5er. Use this break to reflect on what
you’ve achieved, what you love about the job, and the
areas you want to grow in. as well as having time to sit
back and get out of the business of ‘doing,’ a break gives
you that space to think of different ideas. While you’re
chilling on some tropical island, draft up an action plan
for the next 12 months. list everything you want out of
your job and how you envision getting it. To keep you on
track, motivated, and feeling like you’re achieving things,
break it into a monthly plan, ticking each win off as you
go. set a reminder for the end of each month to go back
over the plan, reframe, and reinvigorate your ambition.
time to change jobs
But before resigning, draft up a pros and cons list of the
role. if you have gaps in which you are unhappier, then it’s
a good indication for you to start looking for another role.
if you’re unhappy with the people you work with but enjoy
the job, it’s on you to sort the situation out. if you enjoy the
work, you don’t have to have a huge career change—you
probably already have the right contacts, so hit them up
for intel on who may be hiring in your circles, or approach
your favorite companies knowing what you want out of
your next role. at the same time, look at any in-office
personality mismatches as an opportunity to enhance
your emotional intelligence so you can respond in
different ways. i call it cia: control, influence, action.
