Trying to be happy Happiness is kind of like chasing a
guy – the more you try to catch it, the further away it gets. But
one proven way to perk up is to write a letter telling somebody
you love all the reasons why you’re grateful for them. When you
give it to them, they’ll get a boost, sure, but so will you.

  1. SEPARATING WHITES AND
    DARKS WHEN DOING YOUR WASH
‘You don’t HAVE to do this,’
    says Rapinchuk. ‘If they have
    already been laundered, you can
    wash them together on cold.’

  2. LISTENING TO OTHER PEOPLE’S
    OPINIONS
Except this one. ‘You should be
    totally independent of the good
and bad opinions of the world...
you should have faith in yourself,’
    says spiritual teacher Deepak
    Chopra (aka Oprah’s best mate).

  3. IGNORING THE SKIN CANCER
    STATISTICS
    Just this year, almost 14,000
    new diagnoses of melanoma are
    expected to occur in Australia
    and, tragically, over 1800 Aussies
are estimated to die from it,
    according to the Australian
    Institute of Health and Welfare.
    Slip, slop, slap, yo.
    9. THINKING YOU SHOULD PUT
    ALL YOUR $$$ INTO SAVINGS
If you’ve received a bonus (yay!)
don’t put it into your savings
    straight away. Marcus Roberts,
    the director of Mirador Wealth
    Management, advises that first
    you pay off (or down) any debt;
‘reducing a credit card or personal
    loan will greatly outweigh any
    interest earned on your savings.’
    10. BUYING THINGS JUST FOR
    THE FREQUENT FLYER POINTS
The points system is rigged in
    the airlines’ favour. Shocking. But
if you have managed to accrue a
heap of points, the most value
you’ll get out of them is to use
them for an upgrade. ‘You’ll need
to spend to purchase the f light,
    but generally you’ll save more
in terms of both points and cash
than if you just buy a full f light,’
    explains Hassan.

Stop that!
You’re juicing your
fibre away!

  1. VISUALISING
    According to a million Instagram
quotes, this is the key to achieving
your dreams. But one study looked
at a group of uni students who
    used visualisation in an attempt
to smash their exam results and,
well, it turns out they didn’t. Why?
Perhaps because if you spend so
    much time imagining your perfect
future, you could be spending too
little time taking the actions that
    will actually get you there.

  2. PAYING BANK FEES
In 2017 no one should be paying
    annual or account-keeping fees
    for savings and/or transaction
    accounts, according to money
    expert at Finder.com.au Bessie
Hassan. ‘If a bank is not willing
to waive these fees, there’s a bank
around the corner who’d love to
have you as a customer,’ she says.

  3. PUTTING SPARE CHANGE IN A
    PIGGY BANK
    Download the app Acorns and
they’ll round up each of your
    transactions to the nearest dollar
and invest it for you. All you have
to do is sit back and watch your
    money grow. #MoneyBagEmoji
