VEND THE RULES

As Monica from Friends said, ‘Vending machines

are the best arcade games, because you win every

time.’ Well, Monica is about to get lucky, because

the contraptions are becoming an integral part of

our lives. Huge in Japan (stocking everything from

batteries to canned bread), BrewDog in London

has one with craft beer, while Patterns in Brighton

has one peddling art. In Australia, we’ve got a

vending-machine-only shop, Vitamin Warehouse,

f logging everything from phone cases to medicine.

Next time you see one, make friends with that

hunk of metal – its family will run the world. >
