THE LATEST IN THE WORLD
OF POP CULTURE IN ONE
HANDY COLUMN

You’re in NZ film Pork Pie (out
May 4). Could you get away
with the typical accent pisstake?
I was in their territory and
outnumbered, so I think my
Australian accent was pounced
upon much more! I was wary of
[doing the accent] – it was easy
for me to create a caricature
of the accent, but much harder
to make it a realistic sound.

You won the 2016 Heath Ledger
Scholarship on your fifth attempt

  • is perseverance key?
    Perseverance, in conjunction

with the consistent development
of self and craft, is key here.
Unfortunately, progression
isn’t always built upon the
traditional ladder system, so
having faith in yourself and
the journey, whilst working
hard, is vital.

Are you noticing the tide
turning for female roles?
I’ve been very fortunate and
empowered in my experiences,
but I still think society has a
responsibility to continue to
lift its game: audiences need

to demand the involvement of
more females, authorities need
to invest in female employment
and female creatives need to
keep creating.

When was the last time you
got starstruck?
Meeting Bindi Irwin. I still
lose myself thinking about it.

Your last ‘f*ck, women are
awesome’ moment was...
A couple of minutes ago when
my roommate silently slipped a
beautiful quote under my door.

The Aussie, 24, may have swapped Puberty Blues for
Hollywood, but she still gets starstruck by Bindi Irwin

FACE OF JUNE:

ASHLEIGH CUMMINGS

What’s hot this month: kick-ass women
IN NEED OF YOUR NEXT BINGE? THE ‘X’ CHROMOSOMES ARE BRINGING IT

ALBUM
DUA LIPA, Dua Lipa, out June 2:
A while in the making, the baseline
beats of this English lass’s debut
album are a feast for your ears.

MOVI E
20TH CENTURY WOMEN, out June 1:
Annette Bening, Greta Gerwig
and Elle Fanning lead this film
about cultural rebellion.

BOOK
THE LUCKY ONE, Caroline
Overington, out now:
A psychological thriller to sink your
WORDS BY MEL EVANS; CASSIE LONGWORTH. GETTY IMAGES teeth into: love, death and deceit.

Haute selfies
Kimmy K loves her LuMee,
and there’s the cheaper
version, LUVO, but now
there’s an actual farshun
version to light up your life
in a luxe way. Rebecca
Minkoff has joined the selfie
case-brigade, releasing her
own version ($99.99). None
of these guarantee you’ll
look like a Kardashian and
it’s all quite self-indulgent,
but SHUT UP AND TAKE OUR
MONEY. Your turn, Chanel?

Sex toys for all
There’s a totally real thing
called The Orgasm Gap. You
know, where guys have more
orgasms than girls (95% of
the time compared to 65%).
Shocking, we know. Well,
a company called Sexy
Liberation is all about
liberation of the ‘O’, so
they’re basically giving
away free sex toys on their
website. What a bunch of
fricken’ humanitarians.

Woke horror
It’s not enough that they
just scare your pants off
anymore – horror films
this year are including
screams along with a social
conscience. Get Out (out
May 4) leads the rush, by
providing horror, high-
pitched violins and blood

  • but it also has a much
    deeper message about
    society, which is bound to
    get us talking more. Woke
    up, ya’ll. #
