WHY A WORK

FLING IS SO

IRRESISTIBLE

DATING A HOT COLLEAGUE ISN’T
ALWAYS A NO-NO. BEHOLD, THE
JOB-SAVING WAY TO DO IT

f you’ve ever had a crush on
a co-worker, you’re familiar
with the fantasy: eyeing each
other in meetings leads to...
lingering near each other’s
desks, followed by... steamy
make-outs in the supply closet,
then... off-the-charts nights
at the company retreat.
‘There’s something so
exciting about knowing a
person in one context, then
crossing over into a new kind
of relationship,’ says Andrea

Syrtash, author of He’s Just Not
Your Type (and That’s a Good
Thing). ‘Plus, you’re more
attracted to someone when
the stakes are higher.’ As in,
your colleagues might find
out or (gulp) you get caught
violating your company’s no-
fraternising policy.
If you’ve f louted the rules,
you’re in crowded company:
half of all workers have had
an office romance in their
careers, according to a 2016

survey by ranking site Vault.
com. Surprisingly, 27 per cent
of workers think a colleague-
to-colleague relationship is
cool, even if it’s with a boss.
Just a decade ago, that
percentage might have been
lower (and evoked comments
like ‘but I don’t sleep my way
to the top!’). But these days,
employee hook-ups have hit
the mainstream – and main
screens (think: Olivia and
Fitz’s affair on Scandal). And

inter-workplace dating can
beat swiping through singles
endlessly on apps. ‘In contrast
to online dating, gradually
forming a connection with
someone in person can feel
refreshing,’ says Syrtash.
If you’re gonna go for it,
be sure to take a no-regrets
approach and don’t hurt your
job in the process. Allow our
experts – and other Cosmo
readers – to set some love-at-
work ground rules.
