PETIQUETTE

Dogs on the Town
Here’s how to keep you, your pet, and the
general public relaxed and happy
BY NELLAH BAILEY MCGOUGH AND PATRICIA S. YORK

ARE DOGS EVEN ALLOWED?
f All public places permit
service animals, but some
no longer allow pets. Be
sure to call ahead or

check their website before
heading out.

PREP YOUR PUP
f Some dogs are at ease
in crowded places, while

others are afraid. They
must be able to handle
stimulation from traffic,
people, or other animals.
Do a test run by visiting
public venues during
off-peak hours. If your
dog seems nervous or
aggressive, it’s probably
wise to leave him at home.

KEEP SPARKY ON A LEASH
f An unleashed dog can
be a danger to himself
and others. Keep the lead
short and close to you as
you walk through crowds.
Skip the retractable
leashes, which can be
more difficult to control.

WAIT FOR THE OKAY
f Not everyone finds
drooling and jumping
cute. Keep your pup’s
enthusiasm in check, and
don’t let him run up to
people or other dogs until
you get the go-ahead.

TRAVEL WITH ESSENTIALS
f Be a responsible pet
parent, and pack the
necessities. Carry a
supply of dog-waste bags
to use, and dispose of
them properly. Also,
bring dog treats and a
collapsible water bowl
to keep him happy and
hydrated.
