Pay and
Gains
Pay reviews with the boss
are unlikely to have borne
fruit in recent months
- such is the state of
business. But thanks
to research from the
Universities of Strathclyde
in Glasgow and Potsdam,
Germany, there’s a new
route to a heavyweight
bank balance. Size, it seems,
does matter. Examining 15,
men and their BMIs, the study found
underweight individuals earn up to 8%
less than men who top the upper end
of the “healthy” category.
Although the effect was prominent in
blue-collar jobs, the trend also rang true in
the upper echelons of corporate business.
Science has investigated links between
the physical and the financial before – The
University of Texas found attractive people
earn up to 4% more – though this is the first
time muscle mass alone has been studied.
Although the intricacies remain unclear, it
seems that the aura of confidence exuded by
the physically strong earns them preferential
treatment from their superiors. Whether
that’s because they are subconsciously
intimidated, or just want to be your gym
buddy, won’t count come pay day.

DUMBBELL SIDE
RAISE AND CATCH
3 sets of 12-15 reps
Sounds risky, but letting
go and catching the
weights at the apex of the
movement forces you to
restabilise, controlling the
descent for maximum
recruitment.
ALTERNATE
DUMBBELL PRESS
3 sets of 25 reps
Working one arm at a time
is much harder than your
standard press, and keeps
those muscles growing. Do
10 on each side with a
standard set of five
presses to finish.
SUMO DEADLIFT
3 sets of 6 reps
Bigger lifts mean heavier
weights, but short rest
periods keep your
muscles putting in the
overtime for fast growth.
Rest for 10 seconds
between each set.
