Your Dads
Singaporean dads tend to be the
strong, silent types. It’s usually
Mum we rushed to when we had
bruises or skinned knees. But
you’d be surprised how, under
the surface, there’s really deep
sentiment that doesn’t show in
our fathers.
I lost my dad to glioblastoma, an
aggressive brain cancer, when he
was just 59, and it was only after he
passed on that I learnt how deep his
love for me was.
When I was eight, I bought my
mum an ad in The Straits Times
Classifi eds during Valentine’s Day,
telling her how much I loved her.
I paid part of it from some pocket
money I had saved up, while Dad
would pay for the rest quietly. It
was usually about 50 bucks.
One year, I lucked out: The
Classifi eds had a post-Valentine’s
lucky draw and I won a couple
Swatch watches. I gave one to Mum
and the other to my father.
Over the years, I forgot about
the watch. But he didn’t. He wore it
day in, day out to work, changing
the straps and bat eries when
they wore out, as well as repairing
the watch when it stopped. Even
later in life when he could af ord
bet er ones, once in a while he’d still
wear it.
A few months after he passed
away, my mother pulled me
aside and gave me some of his
possessions. I can’t even begin to
explain how it felt to see this watch
again, and what it meant to me. I
just wish I had told him that when
he was alive.
Don’t make the same mistake
I did. Go give your old man a big
hug today.
