any program. What does
consistency mean to you?
To me, being consistent
means being on a program
andfollowingit.Thiswhole
conceptofchangingyour
routine every month to
something entirely different—
the problem with that is
younevergettobegoodat
anything.Ifyouwanttoget
good at something, you have
todoitalot.Thebasisof
learning is repetition. Do
itoverandoverandover
again. That’s what you do in
thegym;we’reeducatingthe
musclesbydoingalotof
sets and reps.
ThewayIseeit,there
arereallytwokindsof
bodybuilding. One is “get
bigfast”andtheotheris
“training for longevity” — and
they’rejusttheopposite.
Get big fast is what a lot of
youngpeopledo,wherethey
do anything it takes to get
that way. Usually that kind of
bodybuilding is short-lived,
because they’re not
motivatedtostickwithit.
Training for longevity is
where you basically commit
todoingitfortherestof
your life. And in the course
of doing that, your goals and
thewayyoutrainisgoingto
change over time. That’s
part of growing up. I’ve
experienced both ways.

Alotofpeoplehave
trouble staying motivated
enough to make that
commitment to keep
training.Whatmotivation
advice can you offer?
Motivation is based on two
things.Whenyoustartout,
it’sadifferentkindof
motivation. Most people
startworkingoutbecause
theydon’tlikewherethey’re
atandtheywanttoimprove.
It’s called deficiency
motivation. That’s good
motivation to start with.
Then,afteryoudoitfor
awhileandyou’vemade
improvement, now you’re
motivatedtokeepgoing
because you want even more
improvement. That’s the best
kind of motivation if you’re
goingtokeepdoingthis—
