MCLAREN CLAIMS,
WITH TYPICAL
EXACTITUDE, THAT
THE M840T ENGINE IS
“41 PERCENT NEW”.
WE SAY IT’S 100
PERCENT BEAST

SLIDE-WAYS

Because McLaren owners aren’t
always as handy as the company’s
test pilots, the 720S also comes
with a variable drift mode. The idea
is that it will partially deactivate
the traction control to allow the
car to get sideways, while helping
maintain control with some fine
throttle balance and – if necessary

  • some front brake inputs. While
the idea sounds great the reality is
slightly less so, certainly to judge
from the limited fang we were
    allowed at Vallelunga, with the
    system’s limited tolerance of sliding
some way short of true drifting.
    Simple solution: turn the stability
    control fulltlfll ffyoff.
