Horn chooses the petrol-engined G500
largely for its ability to run on fuel
octanes right down to 76. Front, centre
and rear diff locks will lug them out of
almost any spot, but even then there
are limits. The closest call the vehicles
encountered was when an entire convoy
of cars became bogged in wet sand on
Namibia’s Skeleton Coast. With around
twenty minutes before the South
Atlantic claimed them, the cars had to
be dug out by hand before relay dragging
the others to the safety of a nearby dune.
The G-Wagens also had to cross
Attabad Lake en route to K2. This
lake, which formed when a landslide
inundated 20km of the Karakoram
Highway and took over 300 buildings
with it, required the cars to be loaded
sideways onto small wooden rowboats
and transported to the far bank.
