Embrace
your pain
I
n his excellent advice on how to run a marathon,
(page 101), legendary ultra runner Dean
Karnazes says: “Somewhere along the line we
seem to have confused comfort with happiness.”
That is so true. Our culture is fixated with
comfort and convenience. From moving sidewalks to
electric can openers, we are told that less is the way
to go. Less pain, less work and less effort supposedly
equal better. But that’s not the case at all. Otherwise,
why would people climb mountains (page 96) or
become obsessed with CrossFit (page 46)?
The truth is, pushing past pain, settling into discomfort
and embracing effort are what lifts us beyond the
every day. Once again Karnazes nails it when he says:
“Struggling and suffering are the essence of a life worth
living. If you’re not pushing yourself beyond the
comfort zone, if you’re not demanding more from
yourself — expanding and learning as you go — you’re
choosing a numb existence. You’re denying yourself
an extraordinary trip.”
I hope you enjoy this issue, our 100th. Here’s to the
next 100! Stay strong.
