Don’t have a cow
The lowdown on the best alternatives to dairy milk. By Paul L Underwood
As dairy-free milk alternatives flood supermarket aisles, wading through
the options to find the best — and best-tasting — choices can be daunting.
So we raided every grocery within a kettlebell’s throw of our offices,
rounded up all the brands we could find, and, with the help of nutritionist Marisa
Moore, and a gang of MF taste testers, did all the heavy lifting — er, drinking — for you.
Almond milk contains
only 1g of carbs in
a 240ml glass.
Soy milk
■ The protein punch
Soy’s great for
really active blokes,
Moore says. In taste/
nutrition, it’s “the
closest to cow's milk
and has more protein
than other non-
dairy picks.”
COMMENTS
“Wow, tasty!”
“Spot-on body
and flavour.”
“Just like milk.”
“Not bad, mate.”
Almond milk
■ The all-rounder
This also has
a yummy
dairy taste but
packs much fewer
calories. Bonus:
Almonds have
the most calcium
of all nuts, which
is great news for
bone health.
COMMENTS
“Nutty and not
too sweet.”
“Nice and creamy,
not too thick."
"Hits the spot."
Cashew milk
■ On the light side
Cashew milk has
zero sat fats, few
calories, and is
fairly creamy.
Our testers’ main
impression, though:
“Meh.” It also has
virtually no protein.
But for dieting,
we say Yea.
COMMENTS
“OK for cereal.”
“Kinda bland.”
“What's the
friggen’ point?”
Hemp milk
■ Friendly fat
The least “milk-
like”, hemp can be
an acquired taste:
In our test, it got the
fewest points — and
the most grimaces.
But it can be a wise
choice: “Hemp has
more omega-3s than
other options, plus
a bit more protein,”
Moore says.
COMMENTS
“Tolerable.”
“Weird!”

Is there such a
thing as metabolic
damage?
■ Yes, it’s the
negative impact
various lifestyle
and dietary habits
can have on your
metabolism.
I f yo u’re on a diet
but don’t seem to be
losing weight, or
you’ve stopped
losing weight after
starting a diet, you
probably have it.
The way to get
your metabolism
moving again is by
cleaning up your
diet and eating
more whole foods.
They force your
body to expend
more calories
through digestion,
which means your
metabolism is
already on its way
to improving.
You also need to
move more. Aim
for three to five
hours a week of
moderate to intense
exercise. Moving
burns energy and
increases nutrient
uptake, facilitating
your metabolism.
Finally, avoid
processed foods.
They require little
digestive effort
because they’re
processed.
Therefore less
energy is expended,
making your
metabolism
worse off.
