power needs of the family.. “In the summer
months we often don’t pay anything for
electricity,” says Nye. “We even get a small
credit back from the power company, thanks
to the inverter pushing back power to
the grid.”
Nye says the cost benefi t of setting up the
control system was a long-term investment.
However, he reckons that being able to
regulate the heated towel rails alone will pay
for the entire control system within 10 years.
All in all, this is a very smart house in

many ways. It’s as much as a family needs
— nothing more, nothing less — and it’s
delivered in an aesthetically pleasing
package. Jan goes a step further, saying it’s
his favourite of all the houses he’s designed.
Why? “Because they let me do what I wanted,”
he says. “Nye and Claire were very easy to deal
with and they knew what they wanted. Nye is
a perfectionist, so I knew no corners would be
cut. A lot of hard work and love has gone into
this house. Technically, it’s spot on.”
