Young Joffrey is officially the son of Robert Baratheon and
Cersei Lannister, but in reality, he is the inbred offspring
of Cersei and her twin brother, Jaime Lannister.
The harmful effect of inbreeding was discovered by
Charles Darwin. He described how the offspring of species
suffered a higher risk of abortion, deformity, and
hereditary diseases, if related individuals mated. In the
case of siblings, about 50 % of the genes
would be copies of each other,
increasing the risk of inheriting
genetic defects – including mental
ones. Moreover, studies of inbred
children in India indicate that
inbreeding reduce the kids’
intelligence.
In the series, all members of the Baratheon family are dark-
haired – including the ones who Robert Baratheon has had
with blond women. The marked exceptions are Joffrey,
Myrcella, and Tommen, who Robert Baratheon has with
Cersei Lannister. Most genes in the human body come in
two sets, which are inherited from the parents. The genes
can be either dominant (dark hair) or recessive (blond
hair). If Robert Baratheon’s gene is homozygote, i.e. he
inherited the same gene from his mother and father, all his
offspring will have dark hair.
Does inbreeding affect
children’s social competence?
Can all members of a
family be dark-haired?
Relationships between
siblings increase the
risk of defective genes.
2 identical genes can
make Baratheon have
dark-haired kids.
