Girlfriend Australia — Autumn 2017

(avery) #1

HEY GABRIEL! WE’VE BEEN
FOLLOWING YOUR RELATIONSHIP
WITH JESS FROM THE FIRST
MEETING TO THE WEDDING
LAST YEAR! WHY DID YOU
DECIDE TO SHARE IT ALL?
What’s up GF! Well, even before I met
Jess, for me it was always about living
my life to the best I could so I could
share it with the people watching me.
My perspective is that I don’t have
anything to hide, so why would I?
The same goes for what Jess and I put
online – we don’t want to be fake and
put on a show. We want to be as real
as possible with our fans.

AT WHAT POINT DID KNOW
JESS WAS THE GIRL FOR YOU?
We started figuring out pretty quickly
that we were meant for each other. After
the first time we hung out, Jess told
her mum she was going to marry me

  • which I didn’t find out until later! As
we continued the relationship and took
things to the next step, everything lined
up and seemed to confirm it was perfect.

YOU SHARE A YOUTUBE CHANNEL
TOGETHER. WHO COMES UP WITH
ALL THOSE FUNNY VIDEO IDEAS?!
We collaborate! We don’t want to film
boring stuff, so we end up doing things
you typically wouldn’t, like building a
blanket fort as 20 year olds. I wouldn’t say
there’s a formula to it – as life happens,
you think about what would be fun
to do and then plan it out and shoot it.

WHAT WOULD BE YOUR
DREAM ROLE?
I really love what Dylan O’Brien has done
with his career, particularly with being
involved in the Maze Runner trilogy.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVE THINGS
ABOUT AUSTRALIA?
I love the beaches. Australia has become
so normal to me now because I’ve been
there so much. I’m like, “Oh yeah, it’s
normal to drive on the left side of the road!”

LOL. DID JESS MAKE YOU
TRY VEGEMITE?
Oh, Vegemite is gross. She had me try
it a few times, I’m not a fan!

HOW ABOUT TIM TAMS?
They’re great! I love how you can bite
the ends off and use them as a straw.

WAS IT TOUGH MAKING THE
DECISION TO LIVE WITH JESS IN
LA, RATHER THAN AUSTRALIA?
She has always wanted to move to the
States, so after meeting and starting
a relationship it was inevitable. LA is
the entertainment capital so it’s more
convenient for us to be here, but we’ll
obviously be back in Australia a lot
given her whole family is there.

IMPORTANT QUESTION: ARE
YOU GOING TO GET A DOG?
Jess is obsessed with dogs, so we definitely
will, but we’re trying to settle into married
life before adding to the fam. We’ve been
looking at dogs though; we sit on the couch
and scroll through pictures of them. It’s
looking like a Pomsky, a Pomeranian/Husky.
They’re so cute... but who knows!

YOU’VE VISITED FANS IN THE PAST,
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO YOU
TO CONNECT WITH YOUR
FOLLOWERS PERSONALLY?
They’re the people who support us and
allow us to do what we do. As people with
influence, what we say and do impacts
others, whether it’s good or bad. With
Jess and I, it means a lot to us to try and
help people, and spread a positive impact
in a world that so desperately needs it.

WE HEAR YOU’RE PURSUING
AN ACTING CAREER...
Yeah, last year I shot a series called
Mr Student Body President, which has
just been renewed for 30 more episodes.
It’s really exciting, I can’t say much else
but I’m looking forward to that.

HAS IT BEEN DIFFICULT MAKING
THE TRANSITION FROM
VLOGGER TO ACTOR?
I’ve been acting since school and studied
it at university, so for me it’s been a natural
process. Getting into social media has
helped me get bigger, better roles. I would
say it’s becoming more normal to see
social media stars in projects, and it’s
been good to show people I’m not just
a YouTuber confined in this one space.
