The Argonauts, Maggie Nelson
This is about the author’s relationship with
artist Harry Dodge, who is gender fluid.
Emma says, “It might require a bit of work
but The Argonauts rewards us with an
expansive way of considering identity,
caretaking, and freedom. Maybe it will
change the way we think and speak
about others and ourselves?”
How to be a Woman, Caitlin
Moran Emma is a huge fan of London
writer Caitlin Moran and has read
this book several times. She says she
“read it on a plane from London to
New York and I laughed out loud
and cried so much I think the whole
of my cabin, airline staff included,
thought I was losing my mind!”
The Handmaid’s Tale, Margaret
Atwood This novel sometimes pops up on high-school
required reading lists. The story is set in the future and
women have no rights. It’s told through the eyes of Offred,
a woman who is considered only useful for having
babies. (There is also a TV series in the works
featuring Alexis Bledel.)
HOW DOES YOUR WORK
AS A FEMINIST REFLECT IN
YOUR CHARACTER OF BELLE?
If you listen to the lyrics of “Belle”, particularly
the reprise, the whole song is about a woman
saying: “I want more. I want more than people
expect me to want: I want to do more than
is expected of me; I can’t and don’t know
how to accept the status quo; I want more”.
That kind of self-belief and defiance and
inner strength is definitely something that
resonates. As a young woman, I remember
watching her sing that song and feeling, “Oh,
this woman is for me; she’s speaking for me;
I see something there that resonates. She is
definitely a part of who I have become now.
WE FIRST SAW EMMA AS A BUSHY HAIRED,
BUCK-TOOTHED HERMIONE GRANGER, BUT
HER RED-CARPET HAIR AND MAKEUP LOOKS
COULDN’T BE FURTHER FROM THAT. NO WONDER
SHE WAS CHOSEN TO PLAY BEAUTY...

JULY 2011
Emma legit broke the Internet
when she chopped her hair
into a pixie cut for a role –
and totally nailed its public
debut. This slicked-back style
looks super edgy with those
fierce metallic cat eyes.
FEBRUARY 2012
Emma achieved the impossible
and grew out her pixie cut
without it *ever* looking
anything but glam!
JUNE 2013
A huge fan of an
updo, this looser
look struck the
perfect balance
between fash-
forward and
elegant. Scarlet lips
and brushed-up
brows helped too.
MARCH 2014
This gorge look is
unashamedly
pretty – the
elegant Breakfast
at Tiffany’s style
updo, the rosy
cheeks, the
peachy lip – it’s
one of Emma’s
best red-carpet
moments of
all time.
DECEMBER 2014
Emma knows a bold lip looks
~amaze~ on her and has
made it her signature look,
once again rocking the red.
Her polished side-swept hair
is all the glam goals.
NOVEMBER 2016
Emma has pulled
together all her fave
beauty trends into one
epically cool look –
the loose wavy updo,
the silvery eyes, the
peachy pink blush and
of course the red lip.
10/10 would copy.
