of the dance
world but oh! –
if only they were
as simple as
sitting opposite
someone at a desk! Instead of
convincing your prospective
employer with words, you
have to spend at least an
hour, stripped down to your
most revealing clothes,
physically demonstrating
what you can do. And, unlike
a job interview, you rarely get
a personal, one-on-one
chance to convince your
employer that you are the
best person for the job:
instead you are usually in a
room full of similarly
determined candidates
all vying for a place! This
goes for auditions for
training institutions or
professional companies.

show such keen interest. Each
year we approach the audition process from a different angle. This issue's feature
concentrates on the class. "Doing class" might seem like the most familiar thing in
the world to a dancer, but it's a different matter when you are “doing class” for an
audition with a strange teacher and a panel of people scrutinising you from out the
front. Preparation is the key, so read our feature and go in with confidence. We also
have a first-hand account of the tribulations of auditioning overseas as well as a
close-up look at the audition procedure back home at the Australian Ballet School.
This is my first issue back at the desk since I went away on extended leave. I am
thrilled to announce that Nina Levy, who so capably took over the show while I was
away, will be sharing the job with me, as Co-Editor. If Stravinsky's monumental Rite
of Spring can be divided between two players, so too can Dance Australia!
