42 / AUDITION SPECIAL
been successful in moving though to round
two. If you have been successful, you will
present a one-minute solo in a dance genre of
your choice either choreographed by you or
another individual.
Is it ok to ask questions?
Yes! The panel is mindful of the fact that an
audition can be a very stressful experience
for some people and that they may feel
nervous to ask questions. At the
commencement of the audition the panel
will encourage you to ask questions
whenever you need something clarified.
Is it ok to ask for something to be
demonstrated again?
Yes. You may find yourself in a situation where
you are at the back of the class and have had
challenges in seeing the teacher and therefore,
missing out on picking up sections of the
sequence or, you might have challenges in
picking up movement quickly. The panel is
sympathetic to the conditions that may arise on
the audition day as well as understanding that
some people are quicker learners than others.
If I am capable of doing something harder
than has been set in an exercise, should
I do it? Or should I stick to what has
been requested?
You should always attempt to do what has
been requested by the teacher. However,
there may be occasions when the teacher
will give you an option to do more or less.
You need to be wise in the choice you will
take. The audition panel would rather see
you execute a movement sequence with
clarity, strength and precision rather than
demonstrating how many pirouettes you can
pull off. The panel is interested in quality
rather than quantity.
Will I get to choose where I stand or will we be
allocated positions?
You will be allocated positions.
What should I do if I get asked to do something
I haven’t learned how to do yet?
In the first instance you should let the
teacher know who will then inform
the panel. If it is safe to do so, you should
attempt the step, however, this will depend
on whether you have had time to understand
the mechanics of the movement, time to
practice and you feel confident. Just
remember, it is important to communicate
with the teacher.
Will I need to improvise?
No
Will I need to learn repertoire?
No

Will the class include a
warm-up?
It’s a good idea to be physically warmed up
before the dance audition commences,
however we always conduct a 15-20 minute
warm up before we start progressions.
