A Jersey cow named Nigella, closely followed

by another called Poh, ambles along the track

on her way to the milking shed. The names

tell you that someone on this farm must have

a good sense of humour to name these golden beauties after the stars

of television cooking shows. Four generations of the McCauls have

lived on these 111 hectares on the southern Fleurieu Peninsula, where

today the family make award-winning cheeses under the Alexandrina

Cheese Company label — discover their story on page 100.

Food and family go hand in hand, so it’s no surprise to discover that

many of the people we’ve featured in our annual Food and Wine Issue

are following in their family’s footsteps, just like the McCauls. Young

winemaker Nic Peterkin is making waves in the wine world, just as

his dad Michael did before him, while his mother Shelley is from the

Cullen wine family. “Wine was always at the table when we were having

dinner, especially with my grandmother, Di [Cullen], when we would

go there for Sunday dinners,” he recalls on page 28. “Even from the

age of five I would smell the wine and guess what it was.”

For the last 30 years chef Armando Percuoco has been well known

for his Paddington restaurant, Buon Ricordo, but fewer people know

about his Hunter Valley property, Valleyfield. Here, he has guest

accommodation on the olive grove where, and foodies take note, you

can enjoy delicious meals from Buon Ricordo, ordered before your

arrival — definitely a very tempting thought!

Over the years I’ve discovered that chefs are usually very good

people to ask for travel tips — they are always searching for great

places to eat, drink and shop — so that’s exactly what we did for you
