Almost all the chapters of this book had their genesis in a one-day conference,
‘The Australian Sonderweg: Between Choice, Chance and Destiny’, held in
2014 on the Fremantle Campus of the University of Notre Dame Australia
(UNDA). This event constituted the annual conference of the Freedom to
Choose programme, which is jointly sponsored by UNDA and the Mannkal
Economics Education Foundation. Special thanks are therefore owed to the
Foundation for its funding of the conference and to UNDA for providing
