THE BUZZ
CAFFEINATED
SNACKS
Not a fan of
the flat white?
Caffeine-
infused snacks
are the next
big thing.
Exhibit A: US
brand STEEM
- a caffeinated
peanut butter
that offers
more caff per
serve than a
cup of coffee.
Your morning
toast never
tasted
so perky.
These contain sulforaphane,
a cancer-fighting compound
found in cruciferous vegies like
cauliflower and broccoli. Broccoli
sprouts, however, have more than
50 times the amount than in regs
broc. But the true benefits, err,
sprout beyond this. “There is
a n i m p r e s s i ve b o d y o f r e a l l y
exciting, scientifically validated
research into many of the
component phytochemicals
of broccoli sprouts,” says WH
Nutrition Expert Kristen Beck.
“They are a rich source of
health-promoting glucosinolates,
phenolic compounds, minerals
and vitamins, which might have
potential to alleviate pain, boost
immunity, regulate type 2
diabetes and cardiovascular
symptoms, boost liver function,
as well as help naturally manage
inflammatory digestive and skin
disorders. There is also research
to suggest that nutrients in
broccoli sprouts can have an
anti-depressant action, and have
even been shown to slow cancer
growth (in animal studies only at
this point).” Sprinkle on salads or
have a sprout-packed sandwich.
Sure, seeds are nothing new, but the
way we’ll be munching them is
changing. According to nutritionist
Vicki Edgson, co-author of Amazing
Edible Seeds, we’re moving on
from standard snacking: she
recommends sprinkling caraway
on your salad to prevent indigestion;
putting cardamom in your curry
to help relieve colds; adding
nigella (black cumin) to smoothies
to aid weight loss and mixing
fenugreek into scrambled eggs
to lower bad cholesterol.
TRY Not a sprinkler? Consider seed
butters. Eg, Ceres Organics
(ceresorganics.com.au) makes
seriously addictive pumpkin seed
and sunflower butters. Spread
o n c r a c k e r s a n d v e g i e s o r s t i r
into sauce. You heard it here first:
they’re the new nut butter.
BROCCOLI
SPROUTS
ACV me
Struggling to knock
back that apple cider
vinegar shot? You could find
an alternative in ‘drinking
vinegars’. These specially
made beverages mix vinegar
(usually ACV) with fruit and
s w e e t e n e r, t o m a k e t h e
whole situation more
palatable.
