WATERCOOLER
MOMENTS
*1 “Goth goes Gospel. Dave Gahan’s best
vocal ever. Sounds like he hasn’t been to bed
in a month (and probably hadn’t).”
*2 “The industrial Zephyr Mix of In Your
Room, produced by Butch Vig, appeals to my
‘offi ce goth’ sensibilities the most.”
*3 “The King of electronic songs.”
*4 “I remember feeling uber-cool singing along
to this at Florida’s Wet ’n’ Wild disco. It had only
just been released in the US and I already knew
all the words as it had been out for a couple of
weeks in the UK.”
*5 “I love it when they sound angry!”
*6 “The soundtrack to a hellish phase of
romantic dejection living in semi-squalor in a
Sheffi eld two-up, two-down. Happy days.”
*7 “I hadn’t even heard it until I bought
their greatest hits in 1998 and then became
obsessed with it. Still feel robbed of its 12 years
of existence without me knowing it!”
*8 “It skedaddles along like a puppy dog.”
*9 “All jaunty monophonic synth riffs, DM’s
debut was a complete fl op when it was fi rst
released. How did that happen?

World in my Eyes

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE DEPECHE MODE SONG?

Mark Lindores grew up
during the golden age of
pop mags, devouring Smash
Hits and Number One.
He now writes about the
artists he used to read about
for Classic Pop, Total Film and Mixmag.
This issue, he casts his eye over the back
catalogue of Janet Jackson and tells the
story of Terence Trent D’Arby’s fall from
grace in our Classic Album feature.

Paul Lester has been
Features Editor of Melody
Maker, and later Deputy
Editor of Uncut. Since
2007, he has freelanced for
The Guardian, The Sunday
Times, The Independent, MOJO, Classic
Rock, Prog and Classic Pop, where this
issue he tells the story of Creation Records,
meets St Etienne and helms our reissues
and compilations reviews section.

Wyndham Wallace
is formerly a publicist,
label representative
and artist manager who
has written for Uncut
and The Guardian. He
oversees Classic Pop’s new albums
reviews section, and this month talks
to Alison Moyet. His fi rst book, Lee,
Myself & I, was about singer-songwriter
Lee Hazlewood.
