Astronomers know about 1,786
asteroids, which could make up
threats, because they are less
than 7.5 million km from
Earth and have diameters
of 140+ m. Most major
asteroids of more than
1 km have been
identified, but
scientists estimate
that 300,000 space
rocks of 40+ m remain
unidentified. With a 7
stage strategy, NASA
aims to spot asteroids
earlier, map out their
orbits more accurately, and
prevent them from colliding
with Earth, if necessary.
