New skyskcrapers mushroom all over China,
but outside Shanghai, a new “groundscraper”
dips into the ground instead. An abandoned quarry
has left a 90-m-deep hole, in which a luxury hotel
will be built, grafted into the side of the quarry and
overlooking an artificial lake. The structure, which
descends 19 storeys into the ground, uses
underground heat for heating and electricity. The
eco-friendly approach is emphasised by a green roof,
making the hotel almost ”invisible” from the road.
