New research confirms good slumber
keeps the black dog at bay

Bad sleep and clinical-grade misery are
close cousins. Research shows that
about 70 per cent of depression
sufferers have insomnia symptoms,
while roughly 30-40 per cent of
people with insomnia exhibit signs
of depression.
Why the link? Nightly restlessness
likely messes with your hormones
and sleep-wake cycle, increasing
depression risk, says Dr Philip
Batterham, a senior visiting fellow at
the Black Dog Institute. Happily, a new
study shows that treating patients’
insomnia can ameliorate their
depression, too. A collaboration
between Black Dog and the ANU,
SHUTi found that participants who
received online treatment for insomnia
had reduced depression and anxiety
symptoms compared with controls at
six months’ follow-up.

chicken was cooked. A week ago. Some
guys seem to think that once food’s been
cooked, it’s pristine. But not all bacteria die
in a hot oven. There might still be germs,
and if you leave your leftovers in the fridge
