apeak brightnessof 3Ͷ3cd/m^2 ,which is good if
not retina-searing, and the contrast ratioof
1,095:1 is also perfectly acceptable, atl east for
web browsing͵ video content lacksalittle
something, especially in dark scenes.
Things takeaturn forthe worse when it
comes to colour performance, with the display
covering 81.8%of the sRGB gamut, though its
gamut volume hits 98.2%. This means photo
editing on the Liber isoff the cards, and greens
in particular lack punch and depth.
With all that mind, it’s again worth going
back to the Liber 14’s price:forless than Δ500,
the displayisfi ne at the very least. There are
much more expensive laptops with inferior
displays–look no further than one page back
forthe Dell Latitude 5500–and formost
everydayuses, it presents no problems.

TWOCORESMEAL
Besides, the CPl· isn’t particularly suitedto
intensive media editing anyway. The dual-core
Intel Core i3-8130l· processor isteamed up with
avery conservative 4GBof RAÛ, leadingto a
lacklustreoverall benchmark scoreof 4Ͷ,and that
includesamultitaskingtest resultof just 29.
Like many l·-Series Core chips, the graphics
accelerator is integrated in theform of the Intel
l·HD Graphics 620. It’sapretty common
ultrabook GPl·, but given it’s paired withaslower
CPl· and smaller amountof RAÛ, the Liber 14
isn’t powerful enoughto run AAA games.
However, benchmarks are only half the story
here. It’s easyto fo rget that many programs and
apps still rely on single-core performance, and the
Core i3-8130l· canTurbo Boost upto 3.4GH҄,
which is plentyof power forsuch soɗware.
Indeed, its scoreof 84 in our single-threaded
image test was its best individual showingby far.
Sure,web pages arealittle slowerto load,
especially those with embedded videos, and
4GB of RAÛ will fill up if you opentoomany
Chrome tabs. But we didn’t encounter any major
hiccups with the Liber 14’s performance͵ just
don’t expectto do any heɗy work beyond word
processing and the occasional spreadsheet.

Storage comes in theform of a128GB Û.2
SATA SSD,which deliveredasequential read
speed of 454ÛB/s andasequential writespeed
of 121ÛB/s. Theformer is fine, but the latter is
slow foranS SD,even aSATA drive͵ we suspect
Avita is simply usingacheaper,slower model.
Not that the Libra loads things up particularly
slowly͵ it’s just not goingto be fast at transferring
large files inapinch. That said, it’s bestto avoid
poppingtoomany large files on the SSD as 128GB
can fill up pretty sharpish, especially when 20GB
or so is already taken upby Windows 10.
Our looping video rundowntest saw the
Liber 14 eke out Ͷh 14m from its battery, which is
just about enoughto squeak throughafull day
before it’s gaspingforpower.

DRESSED UP

Other than the flowery designof certain
models, we can’t saythere’s alot about the
Liber 14 that excites.At the same time,however,
forΔ485 it doesn’t really needto.
The Core i3 processor is more than enoughfor
web browsing, emailing and idling awaywith
some ŴouTube videos, andeven if aspects such
as the screen, connectivity and storage aren’t
top-tier ,they’re all good enoughforthe price.
Addinthat touch of visual flair, and you’ve got
aflawed but likeable budget contender.
