year ago,Iset up acode club at my children’s
school, after seeing first hand how limited the
students’ accessto actual computing is during the
course of anormal school day.
The club is still running, and more than half the school
has since had the opportunityto get to grips with
programs such as Scratch and start understanding the
back endof awebsite.
But they’re now moving awayfrom software,and on to
the insidesof acomputer.Ato ur latest session, the
children were amazed at seeingatiny micro:bit and
startingto understand thatacomputer is not just the
beige box on their desk (this isaschool ICT suite, after all
–nofl ashy all-in-one PCs around here), but all thevarious
components that go intomaking it.
They’re all incredibly excited about the nextfewlessons,
when they’ll be taking apart some old computers and
electronic itemsto see what’s inside,before gettingto make
aelectronic gadgetof their own, perhapsarobot or mini
arcade console.Although one boywas le ftdisappointed
on learning that he couldn’t make an iPhone X, bothfor
fear of the school getting sued, and also dueto our slightly
limited handset-manufacturing resources.
It’s agiven that most, if not all,of you reading this
magazine will be well awareof the inner workingsof
computers. But that doesn’t necessarily mean you’ve also
designed and created your own PC from scratch.Turn to
