This is Canon’s first mirrorless
full-frame camera, but you wouldn’t
know it. Image quality is among the
very best, and the included kit lens doesafantastic job.You can also
get it body-only and attach your own RF-mount lenses.

Afantastically versatile
mirrorless camera, capableof
taking perfect stills as much as it is recording
high-quality video.There are plentyof pro-levelfeatures, too.

If you can’t quiteafford the
exemplary Z7,then the Z6 is
the perfect alternative.It’s
every bit the mirrorless all-rounder,and while it hasalower-
resolution sensor than the Z7,this allows itto shoot atafaster rate.

Sony’s tiny mirrorless camera
doesn’t sacrifice quality in the
name of portability. The 1,200-zone metering system
helps produce balanced photos, and the A6400 particularly excels at
speed-shooting, so it’s definitely worthalook foraction photography.

The G80 is aheadof the pack
when it comesto video quality,
and its stills look great as well. It’s
more expensive than the preceding G7,but includes a
superior 12-60mm kit lens, among other improvements.

Abasic digita lcamer awillsuit
someonewho want stot ake pictures
to view on their computer and create7x5in
prints. It should cost around £80, but there
maybeh idden downsides such as slow
performance and very basic user controls.

02

Spend alittle more and you’ll get a
higher resolution.A16-megapixel
sensor has the potentialto produce sharp
prints upto A3 size ,but only if it and the lens
are of asuitably high quality.Very high
resolutions in compact camerastend to
boost noise more than detail levels, so many
of the best models strikeasensible balance
by using a12-megapixel sensor.
Back-illuminated CMOS sensorstend
to produce less noise than CCDs, but

A3xz oom lens provides you with
reasonable scopeforframing your
shots, butalarger range can do wonders
foryour photography.Most compact
cameras can managea5xz oom, while
pocket-size ultra-zoom cameras can
provide 24x zoom ranges.
Numbers such as 28-105mmtell you the
wide-angle andtelephotolimits of the zoom
range.Big zooms require optical image
stabilisationto avoid blur dueto camera
shake when zoomed right in.

Most cameras now havea3in screen.
Look out for900,000-dot resolutions

or higherforasharper picture.A
touchscreen is usefulformoving the
autofocus point.

Leavesome room in your budgetfora
memory card, as the bundled memory
provided withacamera is never enough. A
16GB card costs less than £10.Youmay also
need to buy batteries.

06

Don’t forget thatacamera’s
specificationtells you very little
about its image quality. You’ll needto read
our reviewsforthat. Withacompact
camera, we believe the user shouldn’t have
to grapple with complicated controls in
order to take great pictures inarange of
lighting conditions.
