Empire Australasia August 2017

(nextflipdebug5) #1

Drive: ’80s music and ’00s violence left a bad taste
in my mouth
Inglourious Basterds: strange how some of the
Nazis in the film are more attractive characters
than the ‘heroes’
Hot Fuzz: unmemorable, like all Pegg
The Social Network: accurate portrayal of
what the creators of Facebook really wanted —
fame and wealth— but I’d sub it for a different
Fincher, Zodiac
Shaun Of The Dead: see above remark re: Pegg
The Prestige: perhaps a victim of dodgy
marketing. It’s sci-fi, not magic
The Princess Bride: I was expecting greatness,
didn’t get it
Titanic: suffers from moustache twirling bad guys
Let the cinema debate roll on!

A list that is sure to bring about a lot of debate,
Jonathan. Over to you, Empire readers — get
stuck into it!

HANDMAID’S TALE A TALE WELL TOLD
Dear Empire, this is my first time writing in to
you, although I have been enjoying your
magazine for much longer. I just wanted to say
how much I look forward to reading it each
and every month. You provide ‘the latest film
reviews, news and celebrity interviews’ —
everything I love in a magazine — and this
month I was particularly interested in your

review of The Handmaid’s Tale. Wow. I couldn’t
help but binge watch it after reading that.
Bravo to an outstanding cast, including
Elisabeth Moss, Alexis Bledel, and to a story
brilliantly told. It had me hooked from the get
go. I look forward to Season 2. Keep up the
great reviews!
CHRISTINE ANDERSON, GEOGRAPHE WA
Due to our crippling Facebook addiction, we here
at Empire don’t get to see as much TV as we’d like
to. So what’s flicking your switch, readers? Write
in and tell us which shows we should check out!

SPIDER-LOVE
I have heard a lot of praise for Spider-Man:
Homecoming. While there are issues with the
film, I don’t think adult critics fully understand
just how perfect this representation of
Spider-Man is for the original purpose of this
character: to give kids a hero to look up to
that’s just like them. Speaking as an 18-year-
old, I have never identified with a Marvel
character more than when I sat in the cinema
watching Tom Holland’s portrayal of
Spider-Man deal with the stresses of high-
school life and trying to stay true to himself.
Peter may have superpowers, but he’s still a
kid. He’s naive, inexperienced, his idols don’t
take him seriously, he’s trying his best but it
never seems good enough. But he still tries,
and will continue to. It is not a perfect

Spider-Man movie, I don’t think one exists, but
I do know for sure that this is the perfect
Spider-Man for my generation

Thanks for your awesome email, Maddie! Nice to
hear a fresh perspective on ol’ web-head.

DON’T DIS CHRIS!
I’m not sure why James Jennings thought it was a
good idea to start an argument about Inception
(July Empire) in a month where a new Nolan
movie is due for release. I am the ultimate Nolan
fan girl. Where most teenagers have posters of
actors and pop stars on their walls, I had posters
of Christopher Nolan’s movies and photos of him
stuck everywhere! In saying that, I was quite the
eccentric teen. While my peers were hanging out
for the new Twilight movie, I was tracking down
black and white classics like Ace In The Hole
(loved your recent feature, by the way), The
Apartment and Casablanca. So as a proud and
bona fide film buff, I can safely say Inception is
my favourite movie of all time, that encapsulates
everything I watch a movie for, and I don’t know
what planet Mr. Jennings is living on!
ANNA NORRISH, VIA EMAIL
Hey Anna, nice to hear from a fellow film lover,
even if you’re completely wrong about Inception.
I hope the Dunkirk poster this month makes up
for the upset. Tonight may you dream of men
skiing and shooting automatic weapons — Ed.
