The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a very
popular breed of dog. Cavvies, as they
are affectionately known, originated in
the royal courts of Spain, France, England
and Scotland, often seen next to their
owners in portraits. Mary Queen of Scots
famously had one by her side when she
was executed, but it was King Charles I
and Charles II whose passion for the breed
lent it their name, giving us the moniker
by which we know it today.
During the reign of Queen Victoria, small
spaniels were fashionable but their heads
were domed and they had shorter faces,
much like the King Charles Spaniel. It wasn’t
