This edited volume represents a collective, multi-layered and trans-
Atlantic enterprise: half of the papers presented here were originally
delivered at the international workshop “Neo-Hanbalism Reconsid-
ered: The Impact of Ibn Taymiyya and Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyya”,
held at the “Zentrum Moderner Orient” (ZMO) in Berlin on October
23–25, 2007. The authors of the articles which were not presented dur-
ing the conference agreed to contribute their work at a later date. That
the publication of the volume took much longer than expected by the
editors is caused by exceptional circumstances which we were not able
to control.
First of all, we would like to express our gratitude to the “Deutsche
Forschungsgemeinschaft” (DFG) for funding the workshop and
of Birgit Krawietz’s research on Ibn al-Qayyim. Lutz Rogler, then
research fellow at the ZMO, was a gracious part of the success of the
workshop event. We are indebted to the ZMO and its director, Prof.
Dr. Ulrike Freitag, for allocating additional money for native-language
review of a portion of the manuscript. We are also indebted to Mitch
Cohen (Berlin) who embellished most of the articles. The then ZMO-
student assistants Alina Kokoschka, Türkan Yılmaz, and Katharina
Zöller, further Bettina Gräf, at that time assistant of the director, and
likewise Silke Nagel, a ZMO-staff member, helped tremendously
before, during and after the workshop. Alina Kokoschka, doctoral
student at the Berlin Graduate School Muslim Cultures and Societies,
collaborated in editing the volume, and co-authored the introductory
article. We wish to thank her for her greatly appreciated efforts. Allen
Tuazon, doctoral student at the Department of Near Eastern Languag-
es and Cultures at The Ohio State University and Research Assistant of
Georges Tamer, assisted with editing the contributions, improved the
style of many of them, and prepared the index. We wish to thank him
for his dedicated and scrupulous work. We are indebted to Annabelle
Böttcher and Werner Ende for their valuable intellectual input. In this
sense, we also thank Nadine Westphal from the German Israeli Foun-
