Radio-gaga

i had totally forgotten
what a game-changing record
OK Computer was until I read
your interview with Radiohead.
Twenty years ago I remember
thinking that OK Computer was
the best sounding record in my
collection, and I didn’t respect
anybody who didn’t appreciate
it. Listening to it with fresh ears,
it’s still amazing, and Radiohead
haven’t come close to topping it
in terms of songwriting.

Lighten Up

thom yorke’s advice to
his younger self is to “Light-
en the fuck up!” Does he really
think he’s a positive ray of sun-
shine these days?

New York State of
Mind

mark summers’ illustra-
tion of Billy Joel [RS 789] is
right on the money. The ex-
pression perfectly crafted of the
grounded, street wise states-
men, with just a hint of a wry
smile, is indeed the caricature
of a ‘New York State of Mind’.
And yeah, nowadays it’s cool.
Matt Rocke
Clarinda, Vic

Lack of Respect

i was surprised when
opening the latest RSA (789)
not to see Chris Cornell grac-
ing the front cover. After he
didn’t appear on the cover of
788 I was expecting him on
this issue. Seeing a 20-year-old
(Danny Clinch classic) photo
of Radiohead frontman Thom
Yorke instead was disappoint-
ing. I know Radiohead was your
feature, but please! Then to look
inside and see a piece only on
page 54. Is Rolling Stone
showing this icon of rock the
respect he earned over his stel-
lar career?

Where in the Hell
Is AC/DC?
it is absolutely mental
that there wasn’t an AC/DC tour
in your ‘50 Greatest Concerts of
the Last 50 Years’ article RS

788]. They are an inspiration.
There aren’t too many things
I’ve seen better than an AC/DC
live show. They are rock & roll’s
greatest band, hands down.

Haim Higher

every time i read about
Haim in your magazine, I think
they sound cool. Then I put on
their music and realise that
they’re just making the same
vacuous pop as their contempo-
raries. Please ask Jonah Wein-
er to stop writing about them
like they’re the new Fleetwood
Mac, you’re just setting them up
to disappoint.
Ben Murray
Auckland, NZ

Switching Off

as somebody who com-
plains about how annoying it is
to see people constantly play-
ing with their mobile phones,
I’m absolutely terrified about
the surge in popularity of vir-
tual reality goggles. When I
saw the picture of Run the Jew-
els in issue 789 with their VR
goggles on, I was struck by just
how alienating it will be when
people are covering up their
eyes and ears with these mon-
strous contraptions. I can’t
imagine how someone could be
less aware of the world around
them and other people. Please
don’t let this become a thing –
we’re disconnected enough.

Eastwood, NSW
