Hello!

I’M ONE HALF OF A
MIXED-RACE COUPLE.
It’s weird to describe us like
that because my husband’s
background never crossed my
mind when we got together
three years ago. I’ve learnt a
lot about the different things
he faced growing up that I can’t
even imagine experiencing –
like getting stopped at every
single airport because of his

Egyptian heritage. The last
time we went through LAX,
he was randomly selected for
a bomb search (that went on
for over two hours) and we
missed our connecting flight
while I strolled right through
security in five minutes.
Being one of the most
ethnically diverse generations
in history, it’s really strange
to many of us millennials that

prejudice still exists. But it
does. And it’s bad.
I dare you not to shed a
tear over some of the stories
in our Celebrating Diversity
feature. Khadija Gbla is a
refugee from Sierra Leone
who came to Australia when
she was 13. She didn’t choose
to come to Australia – though
she absolutely loves it here –
she came because there was
