What Tradies Want — August-September 2017

(Axel Boer) #1
24 WHAT TRADIES WANT.

Outright
In 2017 Shannon and Ian Rentsch cleaned
up the gruelling two-day sprint, which was
also the second round of the BFGoodrich
CAMS Australian Off Road Championship.
Rentsch claimed his fifth King Of The Desert
title, equalling the five wins of off-road legend
Mark Burrows.

Pin in to win it
Sitting second on the road after Sunday’s first
226 kilometres from Alice Springs to Finke,
Rentsch charged hard through the desert on
Monday’s return leg in a bid to hunt down
overnight race leader and fellow BFGoodrich
Racing competitor, Travis Robinson.

Rentsch had closed the gap to within
35 seconds by the Rodinga checkpoint and
eventually inherited the outright lead when
Robinson retired the #13 OBR Jimco with
power-steering failure only 90km from the
finish. Revelling in the clean, dust-free air, the
father-and-son team didn’t look back on their
way to an overall race win in a time of three
hours, 42minutes and 40.9 seconds.

Best second
Second overall was the BFGoodrich Racing
#413 OBR Geiser Bros Extreme 2WD Trophy
Truck of Beau Robinson and Shane Hutt.
Qualifying fourth on Saturday, Robinson was
the first Trophy Truck on the road heading

south and announced his arrival into Finke
with a huge leap over the final tabletop.
Despite using every inch of his Trophy Truck’s
suspension over the relentless Finke whoops,
Robinson was unable to reel in the #33 twin
turbo V6 Probuggy and crossed the line three
minutes and 17 seconds behind Rentsch.
Reigning AORC Champions Jack Rhodes
and Dave Pullino successfully debuted their
brand new #Aus1 Rhodes Racing Jimco
at Finke to round out the all-BFGoodrich
podium in a time of three hours, 50 minutes
and 56.7 seconds.
North Queensland’s Michael Marson and
Chris Colborne came home fourth, a minute
ahead of the BFGoodrich-equipped #3

Bike winner Daymon Stokie piloted his
Yamaha through the bulldust and whoops.

It was Yamaha’s first win in the
bikes since Stephen Gall was
first rider home in 1986.

That’s one tough trophy to earn.
