with 332mm discs up front and 300mm discs
in the rear. The BlueMotion technology helps
save fuel and gives average fuel consumption
of 9.0 litres/100km. That should mean around
888km from a tank. For a work vehicle that’s
outstanding.

THE VERDICT...
The Volkswagen Amarok V6 Ultimate is the
perfect combination of work and play with a
touch of luxury, and it’s the only ute in its class
to fit a pallet between the wheel arches. You
can take it almost anywhere. The side-slope
angle provides stability when driving on up to
a 50-degree incline and the front-on handling
capabilities allowing inclines up to 45 degrees
with a maximum payload.
All these impressive specs make the
Amarok not only a go-anywhere weekend
adventure machine, but a serious workhorse
as well – one that’s extremely comfortable

and an absolute pleasure to drive.
Well done, Volkswagen. This really sets the
benchmark high for the competition.
I must admit it was hard to give it back at the
end of the week.

dashboard sounded good (it’s important) as
I tapped away on the dash to my favourite
songs. There was plenty of room both in the
front and back, so when you decide to hit the
open road with either the kids or your mates
in the back they will enjoy their space as much
as you do in the front.

TEST #2: BRAINS AND
BRAWN
The Amarok V6 Ultimate’s main feature would
be the V6 TDI engine.
Having driven other Amaroks, the three-litre
TDI V6 engine was considerably more powerful
than the four-cylinder model, providing power
of 165kw and torque of up to 550Nm. You
really notice the extra power and it’s extremely
responsive with its turbo.
With the overboost feature you can get a
quick, 10-second burst of up to 180kw while
prolonging maximum torque delivery – perfect
for making those quick overtakes on the
highway. The enhanced grip of Permanent 4X4
(4motion) with eight-speed automatic gearbox
makes driving a pleasure, whether it’s on the
highway or off-road. Good acceleration and
power are only part of the equation. Stopping
power and fuel efficiencies are outstanding,
and off-road ABS with hill-descent assist is
an awesome feature. Braking is class-leading
