ARAH IASIELLO,
SUBEDITOR
“It might prompt uncomfortable
discussions, but these conversations
are necessary to break through social
stigmas surrounding taboo topics.
‘Entertainment’ can serve a wider
purpose than to simply entertain – it
can also educate. Just like some of our
favourite stars use their public platforms
to promote causes, screenwriters and
directors use the tools at their disposal
to highlight these not-often-talked-about
issues. But they do need to tread
carefully when trying to bring attention
to such a serious issue – making sure
their work breaks down barriers and
encourages conversation, without
glamourising for the sake of
entertainment. Otherwise,
there could be far-reaching
consequences.”
