Australasian Dirt Bike — September 2017

(nextflipdebug5) #1

IN TWO DAYS’ time I board a
fl ight to India. I’ll be spending
two weeks aboard a Royal
Enfi eld Himalayan, travelling
from Leh, through the
Himalayas to Delhi. Keep your
eyes peeled for the story in an
upcoming issue of ADB.
Two months ago, Suzuki took
our MX Editor, Lee Hogan, on
an exclusive, sushi-fi lled jaunt
to Japan. He got to ride a
Suzuki works bike and have his
fi rst look at the 2018 Suzuki
RM-Z450. A few weeks later,
Suzuki Australia air freighted
one to Oz so Hoges could be
the fi rst journalist in the world
to ride the latest and greatest
yellow machine (P50).
One week later, ADB’s Digital
Editor, Olly Malone, boarded a
plane to Italy for the launch of
the 2018 Beta Enduro range
(P58). He fl irted in the vineyards
with the Beta team and sipped
vino until the pasta ran out.
Not long after he landed back
in Oz, our Tech Ed, Mat Boyd,
made his way to the land of
snails and frogs for the launch
of the 2018 Sherco enduro
range (P66). They hopped from
fi ve-star chateau to fi ve-star
restaurant to fi ve-star test loop.
And then, ADB’s Enduro
Editor, Geoff Braico, headed off
to Canada to test the TPI

Macquarie University. Now,
over a decade later, I fi nd
myself at the helm of what the
great man Geoff Eldridge
created over four decades ago.
Why am I telling you this? We
regularly get requests from kids
who want to do work
experience with ADB. Recently
we got one from a girl who
wants to pursue a career in
journalism and loves dirtbikes.
It is her dream to work for
ADB. While jobs in a niche
industry like dirtbike mags are
becoming rarer then hen’s
teeth, it’s encouraging and
exciting to hear such young
readers wanting to spend their
lives writing about dirtbikes.
A career in journalism is a
rewarding and eventful way to
make a living. Combining that
with dirtbikes is, in my opinion,
the best way to make a living.
My advice is simple; persistence
and passion. That’s how I got
my start. Perfect your writing.
A good writer is more
valuable than a fast rider. A
degree is great but not
necessary. Upskill in digital,
social, video and photography.
You want to be invaluable.
Show an eagerness to work
hard and prove you’re willing to
do anything it takes to get
where you want to be.

system on the new Husky
two-stroke enduros at 2000m
above sea level at the launch of
the 2018 TE250i and TE300i
(P74). There are only a handful
of ski resorts in the world that
allow dirtbikes and Braico got
to ride at one of them. Mind the
bears, they said.
Next month, aside from my
trip to India, Hoges is back on
the metal bird for the 2018
YZ450F launch in Queensland,
staff writer Dylan Ruddy heads
to the sunshine state for the
launch of Yamaha’s latest ATV
and Boydy drops in to Alice
Springs to race the Sportie
12-Hour!
I started reading ADB at the
tender age of 12, and it was a
dream of mine to work for this
prestigious title. When I fi nished
school I went straight into a
Communications and
Journalism degree at
