OUT OF SERVICE
EVEN THE MINING industry has been
shocked by the retirement of KTM
factory rider Ryan Dungey in the U.S.
This Caterpillar ore truck simply
ground to a halt when the news came
through. No word yet on when “RD5”
might be back in operation but doubt
Ryan will be driving it.

ocean. Daintree. Standing
atop Roaring Meg Falls you
can hear the land pumping
its burden of mountain
water down to the coast.
You can feel the rush.
Within this rainforest is one
of Australia’s greatest
trailrides. Fifteen metres either
side of this trail can be found plants
with characteristics dating back 110million
years, never needing to change. I will tell
you no more. Wugal Wugal.

I SEE A DECENT number of people
travelling in caravans and motorhomes.
I think North Qld’s weather and
landscape is a huge drawcard.
“Grey nomads” is what we call them. I
hear some moaning and groaning about
the pace and driving ability that grey
nomads display. Okay, I will explore that.
A grey nomad generally is a retiree.
So, for more than four decades, he has
been getting out of bed before dawn to
get his work done, over four decades of
dickheads at work, four decades of
sandwiches from Tupperware, four
decades of overtime, countless
mornings going out the door while his
babies coughed and had the fl u.
I like to daydream of the time when I
can wheel out onto the open road for a
proper look around. I imagine I will drive
down the cold Blue Mountains in NSW
and remember my time there.
I want to indulge myself by driving
slowly from Cronulla to Botany and
remember the time I used to do that trip
twice a day at breakneck speed. So I
guess our average grey nomad is
driving around doing just that.
I truly hope that when he’s driving
along and the rest of the world is still
insisting on racing, roaring and raging
around him, he can smile and relax and
say to himself “race on people, I’ve
already beaten you”.

MY TIME

WILL COME
