AUSSIE SHOCKER AT SWC
Australia had a shocker at the Speedway World Cup. Expected to push for a
medal in Poland, the Roos went down in straight sets, losing to Britain in Event
One and Russia in the Race-Off. Jason Doyle missed Event One with a broken
foot and looked to be in pain during the Race-Off, while Chris Holder was well
below his best. The Aussies lost valuable points in the Race-Off when Doyle
and Troy Batchelor were penalised for various infractions. It was the fi rst time
since 2010 that Australia has failed to make the fi nal. “I’m pretty
disappointed,” said team manager, Mark Lemon. “It’s just how it has gone.”
TYE SIMMONDS ON 60 MINUTES
If you happened to be watching 60 Minutes on 9 July, you might have
spotted a familiar face. After fi nishing second at Finke last year and fi rst at
Hattah, Tye Simmonds decided to take a step back from racing. It hasn’t
been exactly clear what the boy from Bourke has been up to since we last
saw him on a Kato, but his appearance on the Channel Nine current affairs
program shed some light on it. It looks as though Tye is still riding bikes,
but rather than chasing Toby Price, he’s chasing goats. The story showed
Tye and his father Greg mustering for a family of goat farmers. While
sheep and cattle farming have traditionally been more profi table, goats
are now a big business and highly sought after. Looks like Tye might be on
to something.
RIP HAKAN CARLQVIST
Ever heard the story about the bloke who stopped mid-race at Namur in
Belgium to drink a beer before going on to win? His name was Hakan
Carlqvist and he was a two-time world motocross champion. Sadly, on 7
July, the Swedish legend died at the age of 63. His infamous beer-drinking
antics occurred at his last Motocross Grand Prix in 1988. Leading by 50
seconds, Hakan stopped next to the crowd and skolled a cold one before
continuing on to win. Ride in Peace, Carla.
