Testing Lecture Comprehension Through Listening-to-summarize Cloze Tasks

(National Geographic (Little) Kids) #1

Levels of processing: In both of the protocols, the participants have mentioned
they heard the word and wrote down the word in their notes according to its
pronunciation and neither of them claimed they understood the word. It’s certain
they only reached decoding process without meaning construction.
Differences: The only difference between the two participants lies in the ability
of decoding phonemes of an unfamiliar word. Thefirst protocol foregrounds a
slight shift from“huspiness”to“hospiness”and the participant claimed“I heard it”
and“I am sure”, though. Listening is contingent upon decoding at the veryfirst
place (Table6.16).

Table 6.16 Gap Type 2-Details gaps of 2010 TEM 8 (1)

Protocol 1 (Gap No. 2; Wrong
answer; TEM 4: 64; TEM 8 Mini: 4)

Zhuang: Not sure of thefirst one, I’d move to the
second one. The second one should be huspiness, I
heard it
But I don’t know the word, what does the word mean
I am sure it should be hospiness
Protocol2 (Gap No. 2; Correct answer;
TEM 4: 64; TEM 8 Mini: 4)

Shen: The second one, husky, um
I wrote down the word in my notes, she citedfive
examples, whispering, breathiness, huskiness,
nasality, extra lip-rounding, but huskiness is a new
word to me, so my spelling might be wrong

Protocol 1 (Gap No. 7; Wrong answer;
TEM 4: 63; TEM 8 Mini: 1.5)

He:...“threat”is before the seventh blank, so I need
tofind corresponding words after“threat”in my
notes, I wrote down“lack of interest”and here’s
“absence of interest”in the outline, so I shall locate
the answer and it should be the word before“lack of
interest”in my notes, but I only wrote“dis”,“dis”
what, I didn’t write a complete word. I cannot recall
what this word is, so I shall leave it blank. I am not
sure what this“dis”refers to
Protocol 2 (Gap No. 7; Correct answer;
TEM 4: 69; TEM 8 Mini: 4)

Liu: Number seven. In my notes, I wrote distance,
dash, formality, so the word in the gap should be
distance
Protocol 3 (Gap No. 7; Correct answer;
TEM 4: 78; TEM 8 Mini: 5)

Zhang: The seventh one is keeping a distance. It is a
contrast to closeness, and then the original wording
is if there’s a difference, it means formality or
absence, lack of interest of something. The previous
sentence is closeness means intimacy or threat, and
then the latter sentence is if there’s a difference,
distance between two speakers, it means two
speakers something...
Protocol 4 (Gap No. 7; Correct answer;
TEM 4: 79; TEM 8 Mini: 6)

Xue: Number seven is distance, because this one is
in contrast to closeness and then, I also wrote down
the notes
