Testing Lecture Comprehension Through Listening-to-summarize Cloze Tasks

(National Geographic (Little) Kids) #1

protocol clearly signals the retention of the material-bound information and the
proper depth of cognitive process is reached successfully.
Another point worth noticing is that the key words“poor performance”was
clearly written in thefirst participant’s notes, but she failed to build a link between
the notes and the gap. This evidence demonstrates that notes help little if the
meaning of the relevant discourse is not constructed simultaneously (Table6.19).

Table 6.20 Gap Type 4-Summary gaps of 2013 TEM 8

Protocol 1 (Gap No. 5; Wrong answer;
TEM 4: 78; TEM 8 Mini: 3.5)

Zhou: Active in listening, ways of thinking. Um...
note-taking. Ah? what tofill in here? Ways of
note-taking, oh, ways of. Eh...Ways of note-taking.
My God. Did it say ways? The ways, I don’t know
why I heard newspaper, and then chatting with
classmates. But this should be the negative
influence. Ways of note-taking? Um? Anything
except writing? Ways of note-taking. Oh, I think
writing should be one word here. How to spell
writing? Yes, writing
R: Anything else here?
Zhou: I wrote down note-taking, and then heard the
irrelevant newspaper and chatting. I think it should
be contrast between active and passive learners. One
is taking notes and the other is chatting or doing
something else. I only wrote“note-taking”. How to
take notes for active learners? Just write down...
(pause 5 s) Seems nothing else here. I don’t know
what is meant here by the tester?
I only heard passive learners later and then I wrote
something about passive learners. Ifigure it would
be a contrast here tofill in, but later found there’sno
contrast here. Oh, I wrote here“entire class period”,
but it should be before note-taking. So it should be
listen attentively and then write down something.
There should be something else about ways, but I
could only think of writing
Protocol 2 (Gap No. 5; Wrong answer;
TEM 4: 78; TEM 8 Mini: 3)

Wu: Thefifth one is thinking before writing
R: What did you write here?
Wu: Thinking before writing
R: You just wrote down“thinking before writing”,
right?
Wu: Yes
R: Ok. Are you sure?
Wu: Not very sure. Because I cannot remember the
detailed information The information I wrote down
is not tested here. But I didn’t manage to write down
the information that is tested
R: Oh. Then how about ways of note-taking here?
Wu: Actually I heard a lot here. But...For example,
there’s“you should write down as much information
as you can”
