5.5.2.5 Rotated Component (Factor) Matrix of Students’
Questionnaire Data


In the table of Rotated Component Matrix (see Table5.14), again in order to group
items with unified trait, the smaller coefficients below the absolute value 0.050 are
suppressed and the table shows that items 28, 29 and items 31–35 are substantially
loaded on Factor 1; items 2, 3, 5, 7, 8, 11, 12 and 13 are substantially loaded on
Factor 2; items 20, 22, 23, 26, 27 and 30 are substantially loaded on Factor 3 and
items 15, 16, 17, 18, 19 and 24 are substantially loaded on Factor 4.
The Rotated Factor Matrix shows thefirst factor extracted from the students’
questionnaire data by all means centers upon note-taking (see Table5.15). Items
31 – 35 indicate taking effective notes from various aspects, such as the skill to use
the shorthand notation; the skill to outline the notes in a logical order and the skill to
locate and transfer the relevant information from notes to the gap-filling task. Items
28 and 29 mainly concern the summarization skill which is considered helpful for
taking notes since it is almost impossible for the test takers to write down each word
while listening to the lecture. Factor 1 of the student questionnaire data is consistent
to its descriptive statistics that highlight the importance of taking notes.
For the second factor, the highest loading is 0.677 which belongs to item 3 of
identifying the lecturer’s accent and the subsequent less closely related items are
items 11, 12 and 13 related to the main idea of the lecture, items 5, 7, and 8 of
comprehending the word meaning, either of new words or key concepts and item 2
again about decoding acoustic input, such as various intonation. It’s hard to extract
a common feature of these items; hence a compromise is using the most relevant
