JUST 1 J14 ADVENTURE HELMET

he adventure-style helmet has
really taken off lately and it’s little
wonder why. I mean, it makes
sense: a dirtbike helmet is pretty
lousy on the road and so too is a road helmet
in the dirt. Hey, let’s combine those two
styles. Genius!
The risk here is that it may end up being
mediocre for both disciplines but, with theadvancements in helmet technology, that’s
not necessarily the case. I’ve been testing the
new J14 Adventure helmet from Just 1, which
has only recently been made available to
the Australian public. As the name suggests,
it’s designed for adventure riders and is said
to blend the comfort and protection of a
conventional full-face helmet with the vision
and ventilation of an off -road lid.The fi rst thing I noticed was the weight.
Man, it’s light. This is thanks to the helmet’s
full carbon shell. But the real selling point is
the lid’s versatility. The peak can be taken on
and off quickly, which signifi cantly reduces
drag on the highway. And the wide visor
hole doesn’t just aid in visibility, it can also
accommodate motocross goggles for when
the going gets muddy. As usual, multiple
adjustable vents can be found around the
helmet and the inner liner can be removed.
I found the new Just 1 Adventure lid to be as
good, if not be er, than most dirtbike helmets
on the trails. On the road, however, it’s a bit of a
compromise as the wind noise is quite strong.
This can be fi xed in part by removing the
peak, but it’s still a fair bit noisier than your
standard road helmet.
Having said that, as a do-it-all lid, the Just 1
J14 is pre y damn hard to fault. It could work
as your only lid — and I think that’s quite an
achievement.
