exotic on the planet. The truth? Touring the
devil isle is far more spellbinding than an-
ything you could find in the dusty pages of
the antiquated olde world. We investigat-
ed the best tracks in Van Diemen’s Land,
and gave you a bizarre cold and bold experience. You not only slipped
your mind into low-range and joined us on our biggest island but also
made time for a blissful sidetrip to the Bass Strait satellite of King
Island. Back in the garage, we checked out the best in generators and
got our 12V system in order.Issue 60

A journey to the very core. Yep, we’re a big
red island floating on a little blue planet.
It’s kind of pointless classifying it all – we
don’t define the desert, the desert defines
us. Which is why we are so obsessd with
the moods the desert throws at us, and to
the awe it evokes in us. It’s a hellish place filled with a helluva lot life- a place that’s inhospitable and barren yet here we are again, drawn
into its maw. This was a very special issue that saw us assemble the
best touring and landscape photographers in the land to share their
freshest desert experiences.

Golden Light
It all began a year ago with this special
collector’s issue featuring the tungsten
meisterwerks shot over a single 365-day
spell by Carlisle Rogers. From the Kimberley
to the Alice, from the Great Barrier Reef to
Lasseter’s Lost Reef, from The Tip to Tassie,
no stone was left unturned. An issue that
also saw us meticulously go through newspaper archives to provide an
insight into the deal behind a dozen iconic images and stories that give
even more depth to the tracks we travel on. On top of all this we chased
tuskfish, and we fleshed out the basics of a primo dual battery system.Issue 55

Behind The NT Road Haze
From rainforest to desert. From coral to
spinifex. From the wettest, most tropical,
life filled metre to the driest, hottest and
most desolate... It seems the only unify-
ing factor is the heat. And when it comes
to touring the Territory, it all depends how
you like your heat, wet or dry? This issue
we delved deep into the northern heat haze on a series of roadtrips
and allowed the stories of the land to unravel. This was a gritty and
sweaty issue unlike anything we’d done before. And when we got home
we washed off the grime with a refreshing Hilux test drive over on More-

NORTH BY NORTHWEST
Kimberley & Gascoyne Secrets
WA’s coast stretches from the edge of
the Australian Bight all the way to the Ti-
mor Sea. It is a wilderness where a man
can lose himself completely and where
the colours bleed into each other. We
also went a bit deeper than just touring
guides of the Kimberley, the Gascoyne,
and the Coral Coast – we took on an epic trip in the footsteps of
a Kimberley bush doctor, and fished northern tropical creeks. Else-
where in the mag, Jimmy delved into the true crimes that rocked
the outback, and we took a trip up the Great Central Road, simply
