he thing about chasing waves is that you start
to watch the weather, the buoys, the winds,
the swells, with a level of attention normally
reserved for life and death situations. You begin to taste
the air, believing you can sense minute uctuations
in the barometric pressure, you feel the wingbeat of
a buttery in South Africa become a groundswell in
Western Australia.

I wanted, with Series 5, to make something honest, something
that dragged my own heart along for the ride. I’ve been
chasing waves on and off for my entire life. I don’t claim to
be good at it, I just love it.
After following the setting sun for two months straight
the year before, through some of the harshest deserts in
the world alone, I wanted to go ‘beyond’ the 4WD, and
beyond what a lot of people were willing to accept in a
4WD travel show. I wanted to remind the world, and
myself, that the 4WD is a vehicle for exploration, not an
end unto itself.
I wanted to go wherever my inner compass pointed,
and to see if I could get away with it. Living the Dream
can never be the same thing every year, or even every
month, because if I didn’t keep dreaming, and my dreams
stayed the same, they would swiftly cease to be dreams
any longer.
I caught up with the real legends of this country, the
surfers who keep a secret map of the coastline like monks
kept the secret of brewing. They shared their secrets and I
shared mine, and we moved on.
I learned my limits and I pushed through them. I surfed
waves three times my height, and I nearly drowned at least
three times.
This year, the stakes are different again. I’m chasing the
Edge, travelling further and deeper than I have ever been
before. Stay tuned for the next adventure!
